A Few Days in San Diego, November 2002

Part 3

I know, I've said it before, but to judge the character of a city, you have to study its people—and, perhaps, its dogs.

So, okay then... What should we conclude about San Diego?

Well, for one thing, there's a lot of posers, even for California.

On the other hand, most people are just living their daily lives here, and they don't make a big deal of it.

San Diego is what happens when you pour United States and Mexican cultures into a big urban bottle and shake it until they blend smoothly.

I imagine a true San Diegan saying, "Yes, I want to be rich and have a great car. But it's way hot today; let's just take it easy, and we can get rich tomorrow instead."

I tried moving to San Diego once, but the transplant didn't take. That hybrid style wasn't for me, not for the way I want my Home to feel, anyway. Even so, I'm scheduled to go back down there again in two months, and that's great with me. I'm happy to visit San Diego any chance I get.
