Garden Medicine

After we ripped out the dead grass, we dug a new garden bed so we could grow more perennials.

More pebbles than plants so far

The first winter, we just planted some annuals, until we decided who the long term tenants would be. Just then, Xentrik paid an extended visit to the hospital (which explains the worried look on Nanook's face).

When she got home, planting a bed of medicinal plants seemed clever.

Folks, believe me when I say that a lot of medicinal plants are ugly. Others have qualities, such as craving lots of water, that wouldn't work for our California garden. In the end, we decided that the best medicine for us would be plants that were both beautiful and fragrant.

Now we have a bed of lavender, rue, and (in the back, for its tall flower stalks) valerian. The lavender looks and smells wonderful when we bring it in the house, and rue is unsurpassed for disguising the smells inside a filthy old pickup truck.

We harvest so many lavender stalks from this little bed, we use a laundry basket to carry them.
