They don't build 'em like this anymore—much to the maintenance engineers' relief.

In the 1930's, Americans liked their buildings to have a vertical thing going on, like a shark's fin.

 

I could pick out the sightseers like me, but obviously, many natives haunt this scene, too.

(That top floor apartment looks very inviting.)

 

On the other hand, it's still Miami Beach, and the foundation feels unreal.

All the pretty buildings, and all the pretty shops.

There's no coffee shops, only "local cuisine." There's no clothing stores, only...

 

Despite the beautiful restoration job—and it is a beautiful job—it's still Miami.

It isn't always pretty, and it doesn't feel perfectly safe.

 

But hey, I didn't come here because I wanted to find and apartment and move in.

I came to see the place where they built an entire neighborhood out of Art Deco.

It was August, but it was still very, very cool.
